김영하 소설, 결정판으로 다시 만나다
복복서가에서는 2020년 김영하 등단 25주년을 맞아, ‘김영하 소설 결정판 박스 세트’를 내놓는다. 『검은 꽃』, 『엘리베이터에 낀 그 남자는 어떻게 되었나』, 『아랑은 왜』, 『살인자의 기억법』, 『오빠가 돌아왔다』, 『무슨 일이 일어났는지는 아무도』 여섯 권을 1차분으로 먼저 선보인 후, 추후 『오직 두 사람』, 『나는 나를 파괴할 권리가 있다』, 『빛의 제국』, 『퀴즈쇼』, 『너의 목소리가 들려』와 『호출』 여섯 권을 묶어 2차분으로 출간할 예정이다.
결정판의 출간을 위해 작가는 그간 여러 출판사에서 나온 판본을 모두 꼼꼼히 검토하면서 시대의 변화에 발맞춰 문장과 어휘를 다듬고, 오류를 바로잡았다. 몇몇 작품에서는 줄거리와 구성까지 대폭 수정하였다. ‘결정판'이라는 이름에 부끄럽지 않도록 작가와 편집진 모두 지난 25년의 작가의 문학적 공과를 모두 담아내 이후 김영하 소설 문학의 저본으로 만들겠다는 각오로 임하였다. 개개의 작품들이 출간된 이후 발표된 작품론을 물론, 작품에 대한 문학, 출판계의 반응들도 함께 담아 독자들의 이해를 도왔다.
이번 결정판 박스 세트 1차분에서는 작가의 대표작이라 할 수 있는 『검은 꽃』을 필두로, 독자들로부터 가장 큰 사랑을 받은 『살인자의 기억법』, 한국 단편문학의 백미로 꼽히는 『엘리베이터에 낀 그 남자는 어떻게 되었나』, 『오빠가 돌아왔다』, 『무슨 일이 일어났는지는 아무도』, 그리고 대폭 수정을 거쳐 완전히 새로운 소설로 거듭난 『아랑은 왜』가 포함되었다.
단 한 종도 절판됨이 없이 한 작가의 모든 작품이 쇄를 거듭하며 꾸준히 사랑받아온 것은 한국문학사에서 매우 드문 장면이다. 결정판 세트 출간에 즈음하여 작가는 “등단한 지 25년이 되도록 모든 소설이 계속하여 출간되어 왔다는 것은, 작가 개인으로서 너무나 큰 축복이며 언제나 감사히 생각하고 있다. 그러나 한편으로는 그간의 작품들을 차분히 돌아볼 기회를 갖지 못했음도 의미한다. 이번 결정판의 출간을 계기로 바로잡을 것은 바로잡고, 더할 것은 더하여 좀더 온전한 모습으로 독자들에게 전할 수 있게 되어 다행이다”라고 전했다.
검은 꽃
작가 스스로 ‘만약 내 소설 중 단 한 권만 읽어야 한다면 바로 『검은 꽃』’이라고 밝힌 바 있는 명실상부한 대표작 『검은 꽃』이 개정판으로 새롭게 출간되었다. 첫 출간 당시부터 ‘역사소설이라는 맥이 풀려버린 장르를 미학적 가능성의 새로운 영역으로 등재해놓았다(서영채)’는 평가가 보여주듯 문학계 내외에 신선한 충격을 안겼던 이 소설은 지금까지 50쇄 넘게 중쇄를 거듭할 만큼 독자들의 꾸준한 지지와 사랑도 받아왔다. 동인문학상 수상 당시 “가장 약한 나라의 가장 힘없는 사람들의 인생경영을 강렬하게 그린 작품”이며, “올해의 한국문학이 배출한 최고의 수작”이라는 찬사를 받았고 여러 매체에서 ‘올해의 책’으로 선정되었다. 복복서가판에서는 문장을 면밀히 다듬고 몇몇 주요 장면을 수정해 “이전 판과 꽤 다른 결의 소설로 변모”(‘개정판을 내며’ 중에서)했다. 또한, 책 말미에 남진우와 서영채의 해설과 작품론을 실어 『검은 꽃』을 더욱 풍부하고 깊이 있게 이해할 수 있도록 하였다.
엘리베이터에 낀 그 남자는 어떻게 되었나

김영하의 일곱번째 장편소설인 『살인자의 기억법』은 2013년 문학동네에서 초판이 출간된 이래로 지금까지 56쇄를 중쇄하며 많은 사랑을 받아왔으며, 2020년 독일에서 ‘최고의 추리소설’ 1위에 선정되기도 하는 등 많은 나라에서 호평을 받고 있다.

Returning as a definitive edition
For the 25th anniversary of Kim Young-ha's debut in 2020, BokBokSeoRa is releasing a "Kim Young-ha Novel Definitive Edition Box Set". Six volumes, including "Black Flower," "What Happened to the Man in the Elevator," "Why Arang," "The Memory of a Murderer," "My Brother's Back," and "No One Knows What Happened," will be released in the first set, followed by six more volumes, including "Only Two People," "I Have the Right to Destroy Myself," "The Empire of Light," "Quiz Show," "I Hear Your Voice," and "Call," in the second set.
To publish this definitive edition, the author carefully reviewed all of the previous editions released by various publishers, refined the writing and vocabulary in line with the changes of the times, and corrected any errors. In some of the works, the plot and structure were also significantly revised. Both the author and the editorial team are committed to creating a definitive edition that contains all of the author's literary achievements over the past 25 years, and includes literary discussions and reactions from the publishing industry that have been published since the release of each individual work, to help readers understand the works more deeply.
The first set of the box set includes "Black Flower," which the author himself has described as "the one novel of mine that you must read if you only have to read one," as well as "The Memory of a Murderer," which has received the greatest love from readers, "What Happened to the Man in the Elevator," which is considered a masterpiece of Korean short stories, "My Brother's Back," "No One Knows What Happened," and "Why Arang," which has been completely revised into a new novel. All of the works of a single author have been republished without a single one being out of print, which is a very rare scene in Korean literary history. In connection with the publication of the definitive edition, the author said, "I am grateful that all of my novels have been continuously published for 25 years since my debut, which is a great blessing as an individual author. However, it also means that I have not had the opportunity to look back on my previous works calmly. Black Flower
Representative work "Black Flower," which the author himself has described as the one novel of his that you must read if you only have to read one, has been republished as a revised edition. As evidenced by the evaluation "He has included the genre of historical novels as a new area of aesthetic potential (Seo Young-chae)," which has been shown both inside and outside the literary world, this novel has shocked readers with its fresh impact and has been loved by readers for more than 50 editions. It was praised as "a work that powerfully depicts the life management of the weakest people in the weakest country" and was selected as "the best masterpiece of Korean literature produced this year" when it won the Dong-in Literary Award. In the BokBokSeoRa edition, the sentences were carefully refined and several key scenes were revised to transform the novel into one with a different ending than the previous edition. At the end of the book, essays, literary criticism, and commentary by Nam Jin-woo and Seo Young-chae were included to help readers understand "Black Flower" more deeply.
What Happened to the Man in the Elevator
In 1999, at the turn of the century, Kim Young-ha, a fifth-year debut novelist, published a novel titled "What Happened to the Man in the Elevator?" with a title reminiscent of a comic book. In this second novel, he further matured his writing talent by using a smooth narrative technique to surprise readers with his imaginative and revolutionary imagination, which had already stunned the literary world with his first novel, "Hwang Dang-kyu." From "Your Tree," which received the evaluation "clear and pure as clean water to the reader's heart and mind" (Oh Jung-hee), to the title work, which relentlessly attacks with Kafkaesque humor, and "Emergency Exit," which depicts the lives of young people living roughly at the bottom of society, he showed off his diverse writing skills through unique characters in different situations. The works in this novel have changed the emotional tone and direction of Korean literature since then. Using characters such as vampires, invisible men, and outcasts, which were hardly dealt with in the existing literary circles, he portrayed the impossibility of communication and hopelessness of modern life. Critic Baek Ji-yeon wrote the following, highlighting the broad spectrum of stories that Kim Young-ha deals with and his dangerous novelty.
